The Aaron’s 499 is a NASCAR Sprint Cup race held in Talladega, AL at the Talladega Superspeedway and is typically held in late April or early May. This race is one of four races currently run with restrictor plates; the others are: the AMP Energy 500, the Coke 400 and the Daytona 500. The name comes from a sponsorship deal with the Aaron’s chain of lease-to-own stores; the 499 is meant to imitate the chain’s trend of offering rentals “for $99” per month. The race, though, is a little over 500 miles.
Some past winners are: Jeff Gordon (2000, 2004, 2005 and 2007), Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (2002 and 2003), Dale Earnhardt (1990, 1994 and 1999), and Mark Martin (1995 and 1997). The 1997 race was the fastest, so far, in NASCAR history and was run at an average speed of 188.354 mph and because any yellow flag marred it. It was also postponed for 2 weeks because of rain. In 2007, the race ran 192 laps/ 510.72 miles because of a green-white-checker finish. In 2005, it ran 194 laps/ 516.04 miles also due to a green-white-checker finish.
