The Pocono 500 is the 1st of 2 stock car races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup held in Long Pond, PA at the Pocono Raceway and is typically scheduled in mid-June; the other is the Pennsylvania 500, typically held in July. Both races are unique because neither has a title sponsor. This was the track management’s way of responding to fan feedback. They have had no title sponsor since 1996. The Pocono 500 started in 1982, when it replaced a 400-mile race at the Texas World Speedway.
Some past winners are: Jeff Gordon (1996, 1997, and 2007), Carl Edwards (2005), Jimmie Johnson (2004), Jeremy Mayfield (1998 and 2000), and Kyle Petty (1993). Last year, the race went to 106 laps/265 miles due to rain. The 2005 race went to 201 laps/502.5 miles because of a green-white-checkered rule.
