Kelly Pavlik is the lanky six-foot-two fighter out of Youngstown, Ohio that has risen from U.S. National Under-19 champion to the holder of three middleweight titles. The boxer started fighting professionally in 2000 and by 2005 he was fighting for the NABF middleweight title after reeling off 26 victories. He put his undefeated record against Fulgencio Zuniga and nearly lost in the first round after Zuniga landed a left hook and sent Pavlik to the canvas. Kelly came back strong through the next eight rounds, leaving his victory unanimous.

After two defenses of the title, Pavlik moved onto a new title bout. He was to face Jermain Taylor on May 19, 2007. Taylor defeated Bernard Hopkins to take The Ring, the WBC, and the WBO Middleweight belts. The fight almost ended early again for Kelly Pavlik when Taylor knocked Pavlik to the floor in the second round, but Pavlik battled back and with an upper cut and a left hook Taylor landed went down in the seventh round

Kelly Pavlik took the titles, won a rematch with Taylor and a title-defense fight with Gary Lockett. The future holds a non-title match with Bernard Hopkins, the former title holder. The fight, promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, will take place on October 18, 2008 at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall. Though the fight with a catch-weight of 170 pounds has no title implications, the event still threatens Pavlik’s perfect record of 34-0.
