The Maryland Terrapins intercollegiate football team represents the University of Maryland in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. The team is also a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The University of Maryland is popularly known as the Maryland and is located in the city of College Park, Maryland. This University was established in the year 1856.

The first football team in the University of Maryland was founded in the year 1892. The team was a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1918 till 1920. In the year 1921, it had joined the Southern Conference. In 1953, it had departed from the Southern Conference to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team has won two Southern Conference championships, two NCAA championships and nine ACC championships in its history. Ralph Friedgen is the current head coach of the team, who had joined them in 2001.

The Maryland Terrapins football team plays its home games at the Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium. It is simply known as the Byrd Stadium and is situated in the campus of the University of Maryland. The stadium is named after the former football coach, Harry C. Byrd. After the Chevy Chase Bank took the naming rights, it was renamed as the Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium in August 2006. It has a seating capacity for a total of 51,500 spectators.
