The Midshipmen are the Naval Academy’s sports teams that compete in the NCAA’s Division I-A as independents, meaning they aren’t affiliated with any conferences, in football and in the NCAA’s Division I Patriot League in other sports. The Midshipmen have a lot of achievements: the football team won the national championship in 1926; the men’s lacrosse team won 21 USILL or USILA national championships and was the runner-up in 1975 and 2004; the men’s fencing team won championships in 1950, 59 and 62 and was runner-up in 1948, 53, 60 and 63; the men’s basketball team made 11 tournament appearances and tied for 5th place in 1954 and 86. Their mascot is Bill the Goat and their colors are blue and gold.

The Midshipmen football team plays home games at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The team has 19 players and 3 coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame. The 1910 team was undefeated and unscored upon; the only tie was 0-0. The Air Force, Army and Navy compete for the Commander in Chief’s Trophy; it’s awarded to the academy which beats the others in football that year, or is kept by the previous winner in the event of a 3-way tie. Navy’s other rivals are the University of Notre Dame, University of Maryland and Rutgers University. Navy and Notre Dame, which is also an independent, played 81 games with no interruption since 1927. Notre Dame plays in the series to repay Navy for helping keep them open during WWII; it’s scheduled to continue indefinitely. Maryland and Navy have an intrastate rivalry that’s called the Crab Bowl. This rivalry started in 1905 and the teams have played occasionally since. The rivalry with Rutgers began in 1891; the schools are each other’s oldest rivals still active. They started a regular series in 1995; since then, they’ve played 22 games. They’ve played every year except 2002; they’re scheduled through 2014 currently.
