The North Carolina Tar Heels football team represents the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the NCAA Division I- FBS. The team is also a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and was established on December 11, 1789.
The North Carolina Tar Heels football team was founded in the year 1888. The team had joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in the year 1953 and since then they have won five conference championships. Some of the notable players in the history of the team have included Lawrence Taylor, George Barclay, Dre Bly, Alge Crumpler, Greg Ellis, William Fuller, Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice, Willie Parker, Julius Peppers, Jeff Saturday, Bill Sutherland and Art Weiner. Butch Davis is the current head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels football team. On November 27, 2006, he was appointed as the football head coach in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously, he had coached the football team in the University of Miami and Cleveland Browns of the NFL.
The Kenan Memorial Stadium is home to the North Carolina Tar Heels football team. The stadium was inaugurated on November 27, 1927. The original stadium could facilitate a total of 40,000 people at any given time. It had gone through renovations many times and in a major renovation in 1998 it saw an increase in the seating capacity of the stadium to 60,000 people.
