The Sugar Bowl is an annual American college football bowl game. It had its inception in the year 1935 and is played in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans; Louisiana. The Sugar Bowl is the second-oldest bowl game in the country, behind the Rose Bowl. It is also a member of the Bowl Championship Series.
The Sugar Bowl hosted the BCS National Championship Game in the years 2000 and 2004. But currently the Sugar Bowl will not host the BCS National Championship Game, because since the year 2006 season, the BCS National Championship Game has been a stand-alone event that will be played one week following the New Year's Day bowl games.
The Sugar Bowl will host the Southeastern Conference (SEC) champion unless they are involved in the national championship game. The Louisiana Superdome is a large, multi-purpose sports and exhibition facility located in the Central Business District of New Orleans, Louisiana. It was designed in the year 1967 by the New Orleans modernist architectural firm of Curtis and Davis.
The Louisiana Superdome lost its title as the largest domed structure when the Georgia Dome in Atlanta was completed in the year 1992.The Superdome has a listed maximum football seating capacity of 72,003 spectators, a maximum basketball seating capacity of 55,675 spectators and a maximum baseball capacity of 63,525 spectators. In addition to sporting events, the Superdome also hosts other large events, notably music concerts by national acts, as well as trade shows and conventions. The 1988 Republican Party national convention was also held at the Superdome.
