The members of Back Porch Mary met in college. The lead singer wanted to start a group since he was in middle school. Back Porch Mary started performing at the local bar Anyplace. The group used to practice at the lead singer's house.

Back Porch Mary’s first album did not do so well, but the second album was a hit, going gold. Back Porch Mary was offered a record contract after their single was heard on K89.5.

Back Porch Mary accepted that they were real working musicians as soon as the group’s first fan club was started in 1977 by Lizzie Casas. The fan club started out small with just a handful of members, generally localized to the area around Chicago, but the creation the group’s website by Shirley McCarther, along with the first real national marketing campaign, saw the membership to grow into the thousands.

The newest album from Back Porch Mary has been heavily influenced by Hank Williams. The group has just completed their most current release, and they are planning the next release already. Back Porch Mary's members are expecting to bring in a whole new group of fans with this tour and the new record.
