Bette Midler

Bette Davis Midler (born December 1, 1945 in Honolulu, HI) is a singer, actress and comedienne. Named after actress Bette Davis, she only uses one syllable for her name. Her family was one of only a few Jewish families in an Asian neighborhood. When asked about acting, Midler said that you have to think you’re the best thing since sliced bread, but know you’re not. Her career started when she got cast as a seasick passenger in the movie “Hawaii.” She moved to New York City in 1965 and landed a role in playwright Tom Eyen’s plays “Miss Nefertiti Regrets” and “Cinderella Revisited.” She started singing in the Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse, in 1970 accompanied by Barry Manilow on the piano. Manilow produced her first album, “The Divine Miss M” in 1973.

She won 4 Grammy Awards including Best New Artist in 1973 and Record of the Year in 1989 for “Wind beneath My Wings” from the movie “Beaches,” in which she played the role of “C.C. Bloom.” She also won a Grammy for her version of “From A Distance” in 1990. In 2001, she released a book, “Bette or Bust,” which chronicled her “Divine Miss Millennium Tour.” Warner Brothers also let her go that year due to declining sales. In 2003, after a 20-year-long feud with Barry Manilow, they came together to record “Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook,” (released by Columbia Records) which was nominated for a Grammy the following year. The album was an instant success, going gold in only a few weeks.

In 2003, Midler also started her “Kiss My Brass” show to sold-out audiences. She joined forces again with Manilow for “Bette Midler Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook,” released in October 2005, which debuted at # 10. She appeared on an episode of “The Simpsons” called “Krusty gets Kancelled,” in an episode of “Seinfeld” called “The Understudy” and an episode of “The Nanny” called “You Bette Your Life” that year. She came out with a new Christmas album in 2006 called “Cool Yule.” On the album she sings duets with such artists as Johnny Mathis. She appeared on the American Idol Season 6 finale where she sang “Wind Beneath My Wings” live at the Kodak theater in L.A. On December 6, 2007, “Cool Yule” was granted a Grammy nod for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

She is currently working on an album entitled “Best Bette,” which is due in stores in late spring/early fall. She is also scheduled to follow in Celine Dion’s footsteps as the headliner at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, starting February 20, 2008. This looks to be a fun, energetic show, so get your tickets soon before they sell out!
