Brian Wilson: Background
Nineteen years after his birth, in 1961, Brian Wilson would emerge as the musical genius behind the Beach Boys, one of the greatest bands in history. Originally he served as the bassist, keyboardist, and singer. At the same time he acted as the primary songwriter, composer, producer, and arranger. Four years later Wilson felt burdened by the dual role and stayed in the studio, letting others, like Glen Campbell and Bruce Johnston, play with his brothers Carl and Dennis, his cousin Mike Love, and his friend Al Jardine.
The step did little to hurt the group, as the Beach Boys continued to put out hits. The group put out Brian Wilson-written hits “Surfin’ USA”, “Fun, Fun, Fun”, “I Get Around”, “Help Me Rhonda”, “California Girls”, and many others during their heyday in the early- to mid-60s. The step down that Brian took was not just a sign of overwhelming stress, but of mental illness that came to the forefront after the loss of his first child during childbirth in 1968.
Wilson remained with the group, serving as the primary songwriter, but he was falling apart. By the ‘70s the group had started to produce records without him. He had fallen into cocaine and stayed in his room and the Beach Boys lacked that musical genius that produced great albums and sold millions of tickets. His wife and the rest of the family began to look for others to help. The controversial therapist Eugene Landy answered that call. Landy’s influence brought Brian back from the brink once, but he quickly fell back into the overeating and drug addiction that he fell into in the early ‘70s.
Sometime later, after Landy had Brian Wilson removed from the group and isolated, it was discovered that the heavy schedule of prescriptions had only made Wilson worse, not better. Brian had schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type and the dosages ahd saturated his neurology, causing tardive dyskinesia.
With Landry gone and a healthy light combination of antidepressants, Brian Wilson was able to return to the world and take up recording, producing, and performing again. Though few of his albums that followed his comeback as a solo artist did as well as his time with the Beach Boys, he managed to be a popular act, selling tickets to his shows wherever he went. The one exception was the release of the previously shelved Smile from 1968.
Brian Wilson has taken his new life to not only return to the studio, but also reconnect wit his daughters, Wendy and Carnie of Wilson Phillips.
