Cake started playing at the local club Dealer. The drummer was heavily influenced by his sister's love for music. The lead singer wanted to start a group since he was in high school. The members of Cake met in 1988. The band was influenced by Earth, Wind, and Fire.

The years of paying their dues paid off when Cake signed a record deal. The group's members had horrible jobs when they started playing, just biding time until they would hit the big time.
