Califone’s members met in middle school. The band was influenced by the Kinks. Califone started playing at Anyplace, a college club. The guitarist first found his love of music by listening to his sibling's record collection.
Califone talked to a local DJ from Q97.9 and got their single on air. The girlfriend of a record executive heard the song and soon after Califone was signed. Califone’s first album was a dud, but the second finally got some attention.
Califone knew that living life as a musician was a actual possibility in 1983, after the group's first fan club was started by Patricia Teisberg. The fan club quickly grew from a few dozen in Raleigh to a few thousand from coast to coast.
Califone's new album is the band's first since the group members went to work on independent projects ten years ago. The band has just completed their newest album, and they are already plotting the next move. Califone plans to spend some time apart after the tour, to allow the band members to pursue other projects.
Generally, critics commend Califone for their playfulness with the audience at concerts. A music critic from Portland, Tim DeCambra, has always mentioned group’s guitarist. Califone’s new album is the band’s best received record yet.
