Carlos Mencia: Background

Carlos Mencia has come a long way from San Pedro Sula, where he was the seventeenth of eighteen children. Originally born Ned Mencia, he moved to East Los Angeles to be raised by his aunt and uncle. He appear to be going down a safe path, going to California State University, Los Angeles for electrical engineering, but early on decided he wanted to be a comedian.

Mencia quickly established himself as a comedian, playing shows at The Comedy Store and The L.A. Cabaret. Tickets to his shows were already becoming a good buy. Carlos’ appearances on the Arsenio Hall Show and Busando Estrellas bolstered his reputation and career. Mencia began to host shows for HBO and Galavision.

The Three Amigos tour in 2001 with Freddy Soto and Pablo Francisco was an incredible success both in the sale of tickets and aiding Carlos’ career. Mencia had tow half-hour HBO specials which won the award for Best Stand-Up Comedy Special from the CableACE Awards and a year later he released his comedy album, Take A Joke America.

The success of the album led to a Comedy Central special. Mencia’s special inspired Comedy Central to offer him his own television show. Carlos’ Mind of Mencia debuted in March 2004. The first season received respectable ratings, and by the second season the show was the second highest rated show for the network.

Carlos Mencia is taking the late summer and fall of 2008 to tour the country for his At Close Range tour. The tour will travel all around the country, starting in Las Vegas in May and ending in Rio Puerco in December.
