Dave Matthews Band is an American rock band, initially started in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991 by Dave Matthews, a bartender, bassist Stefan Lessard, Leroi Moore, who plays a large assortment of instruments from the saxophone to the flute, violin player Boyd Tinsley and the drummer Carter Beauford, whom all met in Charlottesville, Virginia.
In February or March 1991, they recorded their first demo with the songs “The Song that Jane Likes,” “Recently,” and “Tripping Billies.” Boyd Tinsley became a full-time band member and only performed on “Tripping Billies.” In 1993, the band released Remember Two Things, its first album on the Bama Rags label. The band allowed fans to tape their shows, which is continued today. After signing to RCA Records, Dave Matthews Band released Under the Table and Dreaming in 1994, a critical and popular smash that definitely established the band's style of pop-rock with innovative leanings. This was followed by Crash in 1996. Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash were the records that gained the Dave Matthews Band national attention. Featuring the hit single "Crash Into Me", as well as fan-favorites like "Too Much", "Tripping Billies", and the Grammy-winning "So Much to Say", Crash would go on to be the band's best selling album.
In 1997, the band released its second live album, Recently. This album featured popular songs like a recorded version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” and “Halloween.” By this time, the band reached great heights of popularity. In late 1997 the band released their second live album, Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95, which featured songs from the band’s first three albums and included longtime collaborator Tim Reynolds. They did this to combat the illegally profitable bootleg market. They also recorded their third album with RCA, Before These Crowded Streets. This album represented a huge change in direction as the band didn’t rely on upbeat hit singles. The album as a whole surprised many with its complexity, with songs like “Don’t Drink the Water” and “Stay (Wasting Time)”.
From 2000-2007, they released their albums, Everyday (Feb. 2001), Live in Chicago 12.19.98 (Oct. 2001), Live at Folsom Field, Boulder, Colorado (Nov. 2002), The Gorge (June 2004), Live Trax Vol. 1 (Nov. 2004), Live Trax Vol. 2 (Dec. 2004), Stand Up (May 2005), Weekend on the Rocks (Nov. 2005), The Best of What’s Around (Aug. 2006).
