David Sanborn began singing at Coward, a local dive bar. The lead singer use to listen to tape constantly as a child. The drummer wanted to start a band since he was in college. The members of David Sanborn met in 1989. The band was influenced by music of the 1970s.
David Sanborn’s first album did not sell well, but received critical acclaim. The second album was a hit and the band was saved from being released by the record company. submitted their single to B98.9 and a DJ took a liking to it.
David Sanborn accepted that the possibility of living life as actual musicians was a real possibility in 1999, as soon as Dorothy Gasteyer started the group’s first fan club. After starting out with a handful of members in Denver, the club took off exponentially, growing to over two thousand in just a few months.
David Sanborn plans to take some time off after this next tour, allowing the band members to recharge after a long tour. The band is in the middle of the tour accompanying for their newest release. David Sanborn's most current record has been heavily influenced by Johnny Cash.
