Der W began performing at Coward, a college bar. The group used to practice at the lead singer's basement. Der W’s members grew up together. The bassist used to listen to his mom's music constantly as a teenager.

The bandstarted headlining shows as soon as they started playing together. The group plays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in the smaller venues in which they started.
