Donna Summer was the most popular singer in the United States for a time in the ‘70s and ‘80s during the days of disco. She had three consecutive number one albums and four number one singles at the height of her popularity. Summers road to such heights of fame were marked by an unusual path through Germany.

She left the United States in 1966 at the age of 18 to try out for the musical Hair in Germany after failing to get the part for its run on Broadway. Their Donna Summers, then known as LaDonna Gaines, was a constant in the musical scene in Germany, performing in Godspell and Show Boat, and a burgeoning solo artist.

After marrying actor Helmuth Sommer, she changed her name and Anglicized the last name to increase her appeal to an American audience. Donna Summer still had to find a way to cross over to the United States after becoming a popular solo artist in Europe. That break came with the song the disco classic Love to Love You Baby.

Originally, Summer was just supposed to sing on the demo, which would be sold to another artist. She was so good in the recording that the producing team of Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte began to create a new disco sound around her. Donna would take off in the States, finally able to come home after establishing herself n America.

Her disco fame brought her to fame and dogged her for the rest of her career as she tried to escape the hold of the music genre as it died in the early ‘80s. Unfortunately her attempts gained popularity in the pop and R&B charts, but ultimately she would never be able to shake the image of a disco queen.

Donna Summer has had a full career with world popularity, long tour schedules, and lavish concerts that helped sell millions of tickets and over 100 million albums. She is making another appearance in 2008, with her first album with new material in 17 years.
