Eddy Grant has been won of the most enterprising musicians of the decades. He may not be terribly well-known, but the singer/songwriter has extended his influence from the stage to his own label to his own recording studio.

He started out as the lead guitarist and songwriter for one of the first multi-racial groups in rock and roll in 1968 at the age of 20. The group was able to hit the top tier of the UK charts with songs like “Baby Come Back” and “Viva Bobby Joe”. Grant, who wrote “Baby Come Back”, left the group following a bout with a collapsed lung and a heart infection. He returned to his South American birth place, Guyana, in 1971.

Eddy used to the move to start his solo career and set up his own music label, Ice Records. He did have some influence still in Europe with the continent’s first black-owned recording studio, Coach House. The business moves, including a distribution deals with large record companies kept him in the music business, but it was not until the late’70s that Grant returned to the top of the charts.

After scoring hits with singles like “Living on the Front Line”, “Do You Feel My Love”, and “Can’t Get Enough of You”, Eddy Grant recorded the album Killer on the Rampage. The album hit number 10 in the United States and number seven in the UK, with much thanks to the singles “I Don’t Wanna Dance” and “Electric Avenue”.

Although Grant would not know the same success again, he did use his position to write politically charged songs to voice protest for issues like apartheid. In 2008, Eddy returned to the UK to tour for the first time in 20 years. In August the reggae, gospel, and rock artist will come the North America for a tour with concerts scheduled from August 1 to August 28.
