Fairport Convention’s members were friends in high school. The drummer was encouraged to play by his aunt. The lead singer wanted to start a group since he was in middle school. Fairport Convention started performing at Prosperity, a local dive bar. The band used to sell their tapes out of their truck on the street.
After this last hectic year the members of Fairport Convention will take some time off. The group is in the beginning of the accompanying tour for their newest project.
Generally, critics praise Fairport Convention for their ability to rile up the crowd at live performances. After the single hit the airwaves and became incredibly popular, Fairport Convention knew they’d made it big and were not willing to be just another one hit wonder. After paying their dues and opening shows for years, Fairport Convention was signed to a record deal.
Fairport Convention realized they made it in 1976, when Betty Parquette started the group’s first fan club. While the club started out small after the organizer heard the group play at a small club in San Francisco, the club grew leaps and bounds after the band’s first national tour.
The band has an obsession with Cafeteria in Austin and are sure to play a show every year.
