Filter Tickets
Filter is the prototypical industrial rock band. Its driving force is one man, Richard Patrick. The rest of the group is picked up as they are needed for concerts and tours. Of course Patrick earned from the master of industrial rock, Trent Reznor when toured with the tour band from 1989 to 1991. Patrick took that example and created Filter.
Patrick and Brian Liesegang collaborated in 1993 and by 1995 they had their first album, Short Bus, released. The record had perhaps the group’s most famous song, “Hey Man, Nice Shot”. The song has often been accused of capitalizing on the suicides of Budd Dwyer, the politician on whom the song is based, or the tragic suicide of Kurt Cobain.
With the hit song and the hit record that would eventually go platinum, Filter needed to put together a touring company of musicians. Geno Lenardo was added on guitar, Frank Cavanagh was added on bass, and Matt Walker was added on drums. The band played concerts scheduled around the world. After the album sales subsided and the touring stopped, Filter began to become a favorite group n Hollywood, as their tracks, new and old, landed on soundtracks.
Filter had so many songs in movies and television shows that The Soundtrack EP was released. It was during this time that the creative force behind the group, Patrick and Liesegang split up. Patrick, being the lead singer, kept the band going. In 1999, Filter released Title of Record. Patrick’s life came into full view on the record, as the songs reflected his current and past life.
His father’s doubt of his career and a drunken incident on an airplane was the inspiration behind “Take a Picture”, Patrick’s experience with Nine Inch Nails and Reznor’s anti-social behavior was behind “Captain Bligh”, and his relationship with Smashing Pumpkin’s bassist D’arcy Wretzky was featured on “Miss Blue”.
Filter struck platinum again, but found that most of the touring group was leaving to pursue other interests and opportunities. Patrick had one ill-fated album in The Amalgamut in 2002 before stopping to release under the band name. He joined several members of the disbanded Stone Temple Pilots to form The Damning Well.
Patrick came back with a new Filter album with Anthems For The Damned. The record, featuring several politically charged anti-war lyrics in 2008. With the former members of the band elsewhere, a new touring company was assembled for the concerts. Mitchell Marlow now plays guitar, John Spiker plays bass, and Mika Fineo plays drum and percussion.
The new incarnation of Filter has played Europe and North America with more shows planned.
