Gallagher began performing as a teenager. His boyfriend dared him to perform. Ever since Gallagher heard Jon Stewart 's CD he wanted to be a performer. He bombed that first time on stage, but felt a great rush anyways. He sought out every opportunity to perform soon after.

Gallagher developed his act for years, playing in every club he could find before the act caught the eye of a talent scout for the Tonight Show. The appearance on the Late Late Show launched his career. Soon he was being offered supporting parts in movies. Gallagher’s first comedy album was a hit and soon he was no longer worried about money.

Gallagher's most current release is his recollection of his childhood growing up poor. He has expressed an interest in doing serious movies after the tour is over.
