George Harvey Strait was born May 18, 1952 and is best known for his honky-tonk sound. The native Texan is occasionally called the “King of Country” and some critics say he is a living legend. He is renowned for his exceptional style of western swing music, barroom ballads, honky-tonk style and original yet traditional country western music.

As a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait has been nominated for more CMA awards then any other country artist. He currently holds the record for most number 1 songs on the Billboard Country Music charts and, behind Conway Twitty, holds second on all charts. Strait has had more gold or platinum certified charts than any other country artist. Only Elvis and The Beatles have more gold or platinum charts overall.

“Unwound,” Strait’s first single, suddenly became a Top Ten hit and was followed by “Down and Out.” After that, he had a run of #1 singles, starting with “Fool Hearted Memory” in 1982. As one of the best-selling country artist of the ‘80s, he was one of the few who survived the flood of rock-country singers, like Garth Brooks, in the early ‘90s.

Tony Brown, Strait’s long-time producer, attributes Strait’s success to his understanding of the types of music that work best with his voice and fans. Strait insists on remaining true to his own musical style without trying to consistently reinvent himself. His signature style is mainly hardcore honky-tonk and Western swing.

Strait released a four-disc boxed set, “Strait out of the Box,” that looked back on his career in 1995. It became the 2nd best selling boxed set ever. Strait marked his 30th year in the music industry with the release of “It Just Comes Natural” on October 3, 2006. It includes 15 newly recorded songs with longtime friend and songwriter, Dean Dillon. It received praise from critics. “Give It Away,” the first single off the album, reached #1 and the title track “It Just Comes Natural” also reached #1, making it his 42nd Billboard #1. “Wrapped” reached #1 on the Mediabase 24/7 country music charts in 2007, which gave him his 55th number-one single overall. Also in 2007, he won a CMA Award for Album of the Year, which was awarded to the artist and producer (both were given a trophy), Song of the Year- “Give It Away,” which is awarded to songwriters, and Single of the Year- “Give It Away,” which was awarded to the artist and producer (both were given a trophy).
