The members of GWAR met in middle school. The drummer was encouraged to play by his music teacher. The guitarist use to listen to tapes constantly as a teenager. GWAR started performing at Accountant, a college club. The band used to practice at the bassist's house.

GWAR’s first album did not do so well, but the second album was a hit, going platinum. GWAR was offered a record contract after their single was heard on Q90.5.

GWAR knew that they were real working musicians in 1984, when the band's first fan club was started by Elizabeth Reiner. The club started out small, with just a handful of members around Cincinnati. After the band’s first national tour the club grew dramatically, reaching a membership in the thousands.

GWAR plans to take some time off after this next tour, allowing the band members to rest after a long year. The group is in the start of the tour promoting for their most current project. The latest release from GWAR has been heavily influenced by old blues artists.
