Habib Koite began playing together in 1998. One of the band's members found his love of music by listening to his sister's record collection. Habib Koite began performing at the local bar Humorist. The group was influenced by music of the '70s.

Habib Koite continued to work hard, scared they would just be another one hit wonder. The band plays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in the smaller clubs in which they started. Habib Koite was discovered after single was played on X97.5. The bandplayed anywhere that would have them in the beginning.

After this past hectic year the members of Habib Koite will take a break to pursue individual projects. The group is in the second leg of the accompanying tour for their latest album. Habib Koite's latest record is the band's tenth project.
