Hal Ketchum’s members met in 1981. The guitarist discovered his love of music while listening to his brother's music collection. Hal Ketchum started singing at the local dive bar Depiction. The band was influenced by the Beatles.

A member of Hal Ketchum started dating a girl whose grandmotherwas a record executive. She passed the single on to them and the band signed a record deal soon after. The groupspent years before being signed as an opening act. The band does not have a problem selling out any venue now, small or large.

Hal Ketchum finally knew they made it after Melissa Ullmann started the first fan club for the group in 1995. After starting out with a handful of members in Omaha, the club took off exponentially, growing to over two thousand in just a few months.
