Hamfatter started performing at the local bar Governor. The lead singer used to annoy his dad by playing his favorite music at all hours of the night. The guitarist discovered his love of music while listening to his mom's record collection. The members of Hamfatter met in grade school. Aretha Franklin heavily influenced the early work of the band.

Hamfatter was discovered while performing at at Attorney, a local club. The group's members all had odd jobs while they worked hard to be known. Hamfatter’s first album was a dud, but the second finally got some attention.
