Idols in Concert’s members were friends in high school. The drummer discovered his love of music while listening to his grandmother's collection of records. Idols in Concert started singing at Lap, a college club. Buddy Holly heavily influenced the early work of the group.

Idols in Concert always wanted to hear themselves at the top of the charts and they got their wish with the release of their first single. The group plays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in the smaller venues in which they started. Idols in Concert was offered a record contract after playing at at Cafeteria, a local dive bar. All the members quit their day jobs to focus on their music.

Idols in Concert realized that they could really have a career in music in 1976, after the band's first fan club was started by Kathleen Ihnen. The fan club quickly grew from a few dozen in New York to a few thousand across the nation.
