The members of Ill Repute were friends in middle school. The lead singer used to listen to radio constantly as a child. Ill Repute began performing at college parties. The blues heavily influenced the early work of the band.

got Z102.1 to start playing their single and had their friends call in to request the song. A record executive heard it one day and immediately signed the band. The group members were happy once they were signed and quit their odd jobs that had supported them while they worked toward their dreams. Ill Repute’s first album did not do so well, but the second album was a hit, going gold. The group plays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in the smaller venues in which they started.

Ill Repute realized that the possibility of living life as actual musicians was a distinct possibility in 1988, when the band's first fan club was started by Liz Menchen. The club started out in Shelbyville with a handful of members, but grew tremendously once their singles started getting national air time.

Ill Repute's most current record only took a few weeks to record. The group has just completed their newest release, but they are planning the next release already. Ill Repute plans to take some time off after this next tour, allowing the band members to rest after a long year.
