Ingrid Michaelson started performing at the local dive bar Fighter. The group was influenced by Buddy Holly. The members of Ingrid Michaelson were friends in grade school. The guitarist use to listen to tapes constantly as a teenager.

Ingrid Michaelson met with a local DJ from Z94.9 and convinced him to play their single on air. The single immediately became a local hit and larger radio stations started playing the song. Eventually a record executive heard it and signed the band. Ingrid Michaelsonwere tentative after releasing their first release, but were more than relieved when they started hearing their music on the radio.

accepted that they had made it in 1979, after the group's first fan club was started by Sandra Dostal. The fan club may have just started out with a few members that followed the band when the played in small clubs, but it quickly grew to thousands after the group released its first album and started touring nationally.
