J Roddy began performing at City, a college dive bar. The drummer was encouraged to play by his grade school teacher. The bassist use to listen to music constantly as a teenager. J Roddy began playing together in 1989. The band was influenced by Jerry Lee Lewis.
J Roddy plans to spend some time apart after this next tour, allowing the band members to rest after a long year. The band may have recently completed their newest release, but they are already planning their next move. The newest record from J Roddy is the band's seventh album.
Generally, critics praise J Roddy for their ability to energize the crowd at live performances. Peter Richardson, a music critic from Denver, has always praised group’s incredible bassist. J Roddy’s newest project has received incredible praise from notable music critics like George Jagodzinski and Jeremy Van Gundy.
J Roddy met with a local DJ from Q93.9 and convinced him to play their single on air. The single immediately became a local hit and larger radio stations started playing the song. Eventually a record executive heard it and signed the band. The members of the group all quit their other jobs to focus on their music. J Roddy were happy to get the record deal, but were not sure how far they would go. The release of their debut single convinced them that they were right where they should be after their songs began to get lots of radio play. The group plays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in the smaller bars in which they started.
J Roddy realized that they were truly working musicians after Jenny Menchen started the first fan club for the group in 1976. Starting out with just a few dozen members in Austin, the fan club quickly grew with band’s national tour and the launching of the band’s website by Laura Nassau.
