Jack Hody Johnson, born May 18, 1975, is a singer-songwriter, musician, filmmaker and surfer who was born in Hawaii. He gained commercial success and a dedicated fan base following the release of “Brushfire Fairytales,” his debut album, in 2001. Since then, he has released 3 more albums and several EPs; his genre can be best described as acoustic/ soft rock/ adult alternative. Johnson was a professional surfer until he had an accident at Pipeline where his front teeth were knocked out. He got more than 150 stitches; and while in bed recovering, he wrote songs and played guitar. He didn’t take this career choice seriously until he was in college, where he met his wife Kim. Johnson graduated with a film degree and in 2004; he and Kim welcomed their son Moe.

Johnson directed a surf film, “Thicker than Water” in 2000 with his friend Chris Malloy. He provided a number of rhythms for its soundtrack. G. Love and Special Sauce also performed on the soundtrack. He founded Brushfire Records in 2002, which released the soundtracks for “Thicker than Water” and his other film, “The September Sessions.” Artists on the label include Matt Costa, Animal Liberation Orchestra, G. Love and Special Sauce, and Rogue Wave. In 2004, Johnson co-founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports environmental education in Hawaiian schools and communities.
