Kelly Clarkson: Background

Kelly Clarkson has emerged as one of the future top female singers of the future. She began on American Idol in 2002, winning the first season at the age of 20. The show gave a guaranteed audience, catapulting her first album, Thankful, a debut number one album that went platinum and earned a Grammy nomination for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The single “A Moment Like This” stormed the charts in the U.S., reaching number one status.

Clarkson felt restrained by the weight American Idol too. She reluctantly participated in World Idol, finishing second, and saw criticism of her album, while favorable, complained that she did not have the same girl next door image on the album as she did on the show. She responded by taking a break from the pop sound and infusing a more rock feel to her second album, Breakway.

The choice appeared to be a success, as the album reached number three on the Billboard 200 and gave Kelly her second number one single in “Since U Been Gone”. Clarkson’s album was certified six-time platinum in December 2006, two years after it was released. Since then she has had continued problems with her management company, The Firm, while working on her third album, My December. The internal problems forced a delay in the release of a single on iTunes and helped thwart ticket sales for her first large venue summer tour in 2007. She then switched to McEntire’s management company, Starstruck Entertainment, and rescheduled a smaller tour for the fall.

By pairing with Reba McEntire’s management company, she opened the door for the 2 Worlds 2 Voices Tour. In January and February of 2008, McEntire and Kelly Clarkson paired a 15-date concert tour that found the legendary and the new singing to sold out audiences.

Kelly Clarkson is working on her fourth studio album, shooting for a last quarter release in 2008, but she is alos continuing her tour with McEntire. The 2 Worlds 2 Voices Tour announced its second leg recently. The tour will start in Winnipeg on September 25 and end in Baltimore on November 22. In between the stars will play 24 shows.
