The members of Kenny Garrett met in 1998. The drummer use to listen to tapes constantly as a teenager. Kenny Garrett began playing at Obstruction, a local bar. The group was influenced by music of the 1960s.

The years of paying their dues paid off when Kenny Garrett signed a record deal. After getting the record deal, Kenny Garrett were sure they would make it.

Kenny Garrett accepted that they had a real chance to become a headlining national act in 1993, as soon as the group's first fan club was started by Donna Neilson.
