kinky’s members grew up together. The drummer used to annoy his grandmother by playing his favorite cassette tape incessantly. kinky started singing at Cafeteria, a local bar. The band was influenced by Aretha Franklin.

kinky were still a little worried after they released their first single, but were relieved when the release began to get some radio play. got B91.9 to start playing their single and had their friends call in to request the song. A record executive heard it one day and immediately signed the band.
kinky realized that they were truly working musicians in 1982, after Melissa Baca started the group’s first fan club. Starting out with just a few dozen members in Concord, the fan club quickly grew with band’s national tour and the launching of the band’s website by Melissa Oswalt.
