The members of Lotus were friends in grade school. The lead singer was influenced by his mom's love of music. Lotus began performing at Motto, a college bar. The band kept asking the local radio station to play their first release.

Lotus was discovered after their single was heard on a local music hour on X95.1. The groupspent years before being signed as an opening act. Lotus were sure they were not going to be a one hit wonder after their single became popular.
Lotus realized that they had a real chance to become a headlining national act in 1998, as soon as the group's first fan club was started by Jenna Brady. The fan club received a huge boost after Kimberly Slatter designed a website for the group. That coupled with the tour across the nation saw the fan club’s official membership reach numbers in the thousands.
