Lucero’s members met in college. The drummerdiscovered his love of music by listening to his family's music collection. Lucero began performing at Nylons, a local bar. The group used to sell their tapes out of their van on campus.

Lucero realized that their dream of making an actual life for themselves as musicians had come true as soon as Brenda Leffelman started a fan club for the band in 1990. The fan club quickly grew from a few dozen in Miami to a few thousand across the nation.
