After paying their dues and opening shows for years, Macy Gray was signed to a record deal. Macy Gray’s first release rose quickly in the charts, giving them the national recognition they always wanted.

Macy Gray knew that their dream of making an actual life for themselves as musicians had come true when Mandy Ellenwood started a fan club for the band in 1982. The fan club grew from a few dozen to a few thousand after Laura Smith created a website for the band and a national tour gave the band plenty of exposure.
