Magic Slim is most renowned as a representative of the West Side Chicago blues. Till date he has managed to build a repertoire as a prominent blues singer and guitarist.

Magic was born Morris Holt in Torrence, Mississippi in 1937. Being one of Chicago blues renowned guitarist, he has also led one of the major Chicago blues bands for about 30 years now. He first entered the city in 1955 accompanied by friend and mentor Magic Sam. Magic Sam brought him into his band, performing as a bassist and even gave him his nickname. Today he's a brilliant, hoarse, hat-wearing fellow, whose guitar solos appeal to the audience. Slim's grating passionate vocals, and screaming, thundering jazzmaster produce a "whirlwind of Chicago blues." Guitarist John Primer had the privilege of playing with him for 13 years. Magic Slim provides with those delights that are often missing in most of the rock-tainted contemporary blues of artists today. This band is unique for presenting such entertainment, amazing guitar work without an afterthought, and a raucous performance.

Magic Slim and his band The Teardrops, who the L.A. Weekly describes as "house rockers of the magnitude approaching the late Hound Dog Taylor". They have signed a new record called Black Tornado. Former hit releases, include Spider in My Stew on Wolf Records, and a 1996 Blind Pig release called Scufflin'. The Teardrops, with whom he has been working since 1967 have an exceptionally powerful style. The band’s sound is a magical blend of, Magic Slim's deep voice and characteristic guitar style and the strong rhythm section rendered by Jon McDonald, Chris Biedron great skills as an electric bassist and Vernal Taylor's drumming.

Officially Slim's recording career started with the 1966 recording of the song Scufflin'. Several singles in the mid-70s followed this success. He brought out his first album in 1977, Born Under A Bad Sign, for the French MCM label. While in the 1980s, he issued titles on Alligator, Rooster Blues and Wolf Records and won his first W. C. Handy Award. By 2003 Magic Slim and the Teardrops were accepted as the largest blues band in the land when they achieved the coveted W. C. Handy Award as "Blues Band Of The Year". It was the sixth time Slim has received a Handy Award, regarded as the highest honor in the blues field. Magic Slim & the Teardrops gave a live performance that was issued on CD and DVD in August of 2005 titled Anything Can Happen.
