She began her life in Long Island, born in 1970 and the daughter of a former opera singer and an aeronautical engineer. Her parents also happened to be of mixed backgrounds, her mother was Irish and her father was Afro-Venezuelan and African American. This made Mariah's family life difficult in the suburb of Huntington, leading to despicable acts that included neighbors poisoning the family dog. Her childhood became more complicated when her parents divorced and her father essentially exited her life.
Through all this, Mariah Carey developed her singing voice with the help of her classically-trained mother. Carey would graduate from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New Yorkand would immediately go to work in the studio, though she became a stylist part time to fund her dream.
Eventually she moved to New York City and made her into an industry party, leaving her demo tape for Tommy Mottola, a record executive at Columbia Records and her eventual husband (and ex-husband). Mariah Carey's career began to move quickly as she turned 20. Her first album, the self-titled Mariah Carey, reached number one on the music charts (along with the five singles from the album) and sold an incredible 9 times platinum.
She wooed audiences with a voice that could hit every octave and was one of the first to use melismatic style. Carey stuck to this popular style for the first five years of her career, but she eventually wanted to incorporate more hip hop influences. This worried the record execs but the music forward Mariah Carey's instincts proved correct as the album Daydream went diamond and number one in the charts throughout the world.
The support for her albums slowly tapered off until her disastrous movie/album Glitter. The album signifies the low point in her career. She had divorced Mottola and her voice seemed to be in shambles. Critics panned the album and her fans ignored the movie and the album. Eventually she earned her fame back, with successful album releases like The Emancipation of Mimi, E=MC2, and her latest album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. She also came back in the age of the cougar and featured a sexy 40-year-old body, eventually marrying the much younger actor/comedian Nick Cannon.
Mariah Carey's success is even more amazing when considering her initial stage fright. The stage fright never proved to be too great of an obstacle though. Her voice, played through speakers was enough to entrance her audience. Of course, eventually she overcame this fear and had incredible success selling Mariah Carey tickets with the Butterfly Tour in 1996, the Rainbow Tour in 2000, and the Adventures of Mimi Tour in 2006. Her latest tour, the Angels' Advocate Tour is her first extended concert series in four years.
