Metallica: Background
Metallica was founded in 1981 by Lars Ulrich. He, as a drummer, was the leading force in the band, recruiting lead singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield, original lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, and setting up a deal that got them a song on a rock compilation before the jam group even had a name. Ulrich found the name when his friend was searching for name for a fanzine. His friend chose Metal Mania and the thrash metal band took Metallica.
Metallica took a few years, but after moving to San Francisco, the group was complete with Ulirch as the drummer, Hetfield as the singer and rhythm guitarist, Kirk Hammett as the lead guitarist, and Cillf Burton as the bassist. At first the group had difficulty selling albums and drawing a crowd. This was perhaps the best time to get Metallica tickets, when the band was known best as an underground metal band. Since then, actually since 1984 when a director from Elektra Records signed the group, Metallica has been a force in the hard rock and metal scene.
Metallica was well on its way to reaching unheard levels of success for a thrash metal band in 1986 when tragedy struck. A bus carrying the band on its European leg of it Damages Inc. tour for its first successful album, Master of Puppets, skidded on ice and flipped over. Hetfield, Ulrich, and Hammett survived unscathed, but Burton, who was sleeping on the top bunk, was pinned under the weight of the bus and perished. The tragedy almost ended the rest of touring schedule and the group. Metallica, however, recruited another bassist, Jason Newsted, and continued in the honor of Burton.
The new bassist found it difficult to replace Burton and do to constant hazing and internal problems left Metallica in 2003. He was replaced by Robert Trujilo that same year and the group has been touring every since. Metallica tickets have never gone out style, as their music has survived the times.
