The members of Montgomery Gentry met in 1982. The band requested that the local radio station to play their song. Montgomery Gentry started singing at Lulu's, a local club. The guitarist used to listen to radio constantly as a child.

After the single hit the airwaves and became incredibly popular, Montgomery Gentry knew they’d made it big and were not willing to be just another one hit wonder. The bandplays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in the smaller venues in which they began. Montgomery Gentry was discovered while joking around, performing on the street one day. All the members quit their other jobs to focus on their album.

Montgomery Gentry accepted that they were truly working musicians after Linda DiSalvatore started the first fan club for the band in 1978. The club started out in Cincinnati with a handful of members, but grew tremendously once their singles started getting national air time.
