Neko Case’s members met in 1986. The bassist was encouraged to play by his grandmother. Neko Case started performing at Worker, a local club. The group requested that the local radio station to play their early songs.

Neko Case met with a local DJ from Z93.5 and convinced him to play their single on air. The single immediately became a local hit and larger radio stations started playing the song. Eventually a record executive heard it and signed the group. Neko Case were unsure about their music careers with the release of their debut recording, and were relieved after their music began climbing the charts ad getting lots of play on the radio.

Neko Case accepted that they had a real chance to become a headlining national act in 1980, as soon as the band's first fan club was started by Deborah Oswalt. After starting out with a handful of members in San Diego, the club took off exponentially, growing to over two thousand in just a few months.
