Old 97's began singing at Beach, a college club. The band was influenced by Aretha Franklin. Old 97's’s members were friends in grade school. The lead singer was encouraged to play by his teacher.

Old 97's was offered a record contract after performing at at City, local bar. All the members quit their day jobs to focus on their music. Old 97's realized that they could really have a career in music as soon as the band’s first fan club was started by Margie Felson in 1983.
