Old 97's began singing at Beach, a college club. The band was influenced by Aretha Franklin. Old 97's’s members were friends in grade school. The lead singer was encouraged to play by his teacher.
The latest album from Old 97's is the band's first album in five years. The band is in the second leg of the promotional tour for their most current release.
Old 97's was offered a record contract after performing at at City, local bar. All the members quit their day jobs to focus on their music. Old 97's were happy to get the record deal, but were not sure how far they would go. The release of their first album convinced them that they were right where they should be after their songs began to get lots of radio play.
Old 97's realized that they could really have a career in music as soon as the band’s first fan club was started by Margie Felson in 1983. The group embraced the small fan club and with the launching of the group’s own website by Shirley Phillippe and a well marketed national tour the club quickly grew to a few thousand.
The band has a love affair with Kansas City so they are sure to stop by and play a show whenever they are touring.
