The Pointer Sisters have accomplished themselves as one amongst the notable R&B groups. They became widely popular after achieving the Grammy Award. They achieved prominence during the 1970s and 1980s. Throughout their career between 1969 and the recent date, their repertoire has reflected diverse genres as R&B, jazz, bebop, country, soul, funk, dance, new wave and rock.

The group formerly comprised of four sisters: Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June. They began as a quartet, and achieved their highest success as a trio after Bonnie left the band to begin with a solo career. They came up with their self-titled album in 1973 and achieved positive responses, with the group being critically acclaimed for their skillfulness and originality. It yielded the single, "Yes We Can Can", that peaked number 11 on the pop charts. Subsequently they established as an R&B classic. A second single also was well received, and the group's unique style began to attract fans, many of which dress up in the same way for the show.

The next year they released their second album entitled That's a Plenty. It resembled the jazz and be-bop style of its precursors but rendered one exception that induced a great deal of interest. The song "Fairytale" proved another breakthrough. Anita and Bonnie wrote it. This country song came up as number 13 on the pop charts and number 37 on the country charts. Due to this success the group was invited to Nashville, Tennessee where they achieved high fame for becoming the first black female singers to feature at the Grand Ole Opry. In 1975 the group achieved a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Fairytale". The same year Anita and Bonnie were nominated as songwriters for the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. Their most renowned album was released in 1975. Steppin' fetched them their Grammy-nominated number one R&B single, "How Long ". It was afterwards sampled by female rap icons Salt 'N' Pepa.

In their late years numerous Pointer Sisters classics were covered by renowned artists, including Jump by Girls Aloud, which peaked at number 2 at the UK singles chart in 2003, Dare Me was made into the dance smash "Stupidisco" by Belgian DJ Junior Jack, indie band Le Tigre covered it in 2004 I'm So Excited on their third album This Island and French DJ Muttonheads sampled Back In My Arms on his 2005 success "I'll be there". The group is credited for achieving the highest audience ratings among all participating Night of the Proms acts in 2002. In addition, their works with Belgian pop star Natalia on "Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves," took them onto the charts in Europe. They have heavily toured throughout their successful career and continue till date.
