R. Kelly’s members grew up together. One of the group's members used to listen to his aunt's collection of records constantly as a teenager. R. Kelly started singing at Team, a local club. Ma Rainey heavily influenced the early work of the group.

R. Kelly was discovered after single was played on B100.5. The groupplays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in the smaller venues in which they began.
