Radio On began performing at the college dive bar Accountant. The bassist was encouraged to play by his father. The bassistdiscovered his love of music by listening to his father's record collection. The members of Radio On grew up together. The band kept asking the local radio station to play their early songs.

Radio On was discovered while performing at at City, a local dive bar. The bandplayed anywhere that would have them in the beginning. Radio On’s first album did not sell well, but received critical acclaim. The second album was a hit and the band was saved from being released by the record company. Radio On realized that they had a real chance to become a headlining national act as soon as the group’s first fan club was started by Sarah Prather in 1999. Starting out in Kansas City with a few dozen members, the club grew fast, eclipsing a couple thousand across the country in under a year.
