Born on March 28, 1969, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Atkins was adopted in early childhood. As a child he was prone to illness, as a result of which he had been returned back to the Holston Methodist Home for Children in Greeneville, Tennessee after being adopted twice. Finally a couple from Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, took him home and refused to return him back even when his condition worsened. Adopted him as well and, even though his ailments worsened, refused to give him up. His adoptive parents themselves had not seen a very happy childhood, his mother was brought up in a coal mining family and his father had lived through upbringing marked by poverty and episodes of abuse. The couple tried to give him their best. Atkins began singing and playing the guitar which he had got as a Christmas gift while in high school. While in school itself he began to play around festivals. After high school he enrolled at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee. While in college he took up may jobs to raise money for his education and also found time to go to Nashville to play gigs and write songs. Rodney started out slow, he was not able to make an impact initially, but his single "Honesty (Write Me a List)" was ale to find a place on Top 5 hit in 2004. The follow up single was not able to make any mark. 2006 was the year when things changed for the better for Atkins; he scored his maiden #1 hit, "If You're Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows)." This widely popular single was followed by yet another #1, "Watching You". Finally after much hard work and perseverance success came calling to Atkins. Apart from being a successful singer, Atkins has a heart of gold too. A young girl, Madeleine Rose Trudel a great fan of Atkins was dying of cancer. Atkins came to know about her through a link to the Free Press series about Maddie and her illness. He went and performed for her in her hospital room, he sang his signature song "If You're Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows)", which also happened to be Maddie's favorite song.
Rodney and his wife have a 5-year-old son named Elijah, who can be seen in the video of his song "Watching You."
