San Diego Live started performing at City, a local dive bar. The drummer used to listen to his aunt's CD constantly as a kid. The bassist use to listen to cassette tapes constantly as a teenager. The members of San Diego Live met in college. Buddy Holly heavily influenced the early work of the band.

San Diego Live’s first album was a dud, but the second finally got some attention. The band plays plenty of arenas, but would rather perform in the smaller bars in which they began.

San Diego Live accepted that they were real working musicians in 1980, after Jenny Natalello started the group’s first fan club. After the band’s first North American tour, the fan club grew from the couple dozen fans who heard the band play around Seattle to the thousands who heard them play across the world.

After this last non-stop year the members of San Diego Live will take some time off to work on other projects. The group is in the beginning of the tour promoting for their latest album. The newest record from San Diego Live is the group's first album in two years.

Critics have generally praised San Diego Live for their ability to rile up the audience during live performances.
