Slightly Stoopid: Background
Slightly Stoopid is one of those rare bands to turn a high school hobby into a career. The band started with friends Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald. In 1995 they were seen performing by Bradley Nowell, the front man for Sublime. He liked their chill rock sound and signed them to his record label, Skank Records.
As Slightly Stoopid, Doughty and McDonald shared time as singer, guitarist, and bassist and were joined by Ryan Moran on drums, Oguer Ocon on percussion, harp, vocals, and the congas, DE LA on the saxophone, and C-Money on trumpet and keyboard. The diverse collection of musicians created a sound that was a kind of rock that was heavily influenced by reggae and hip hop.
The group put out its self-titled debut album in 1996 and followed it with the Longest Barrel Ride in 1998. The Longest Barrel Ride ended up being the last record they would release through Skank Records. Afterward, they released their material on their own label, Stoopid Records.
Over their career they have established themselves as a top notch live act, supporting groups like Dave Matthews Band, The Roots, and Sublime on major tours. They have also released seven studio albums and two live albums.
