The members of Sonic Youth were friends in high school. The bassist wanted to start a band since he was in high school. Sonic Youth began singing at the college bar Clerk. The group was influenced by Bobby Darin.

submitted their single to K102.5 and a DJ took a liking to it. Sonic Youth were still not sure if they would make it after getting a record. They had heard too many stories and knew that they were in no position to expect anything.

Sonic Youth knew they had finally made it in 2000, after the group's first fan club was started by Amy Klinger. The fan club started out small with just a handful of members, generally localized to the area around Detroit, but the creation the band’s website by Dorothy Hilgendorf, along with the first real national marketing campaign, saw the membership to grow into the thousands.

After this last hectic year the members of Sonic Youth will take some time off. The band may have just completed their new release, but they are already thinking of their next move.
